The title for this work came to me as I heard Amanda Palmer referencing the sin-eaters while relistening to her excellent book, The Art of Asking. The picture was half-complete, and the word rang like a bell for some reason. The peaceful figure in this work represents a willing sacrifice and it struck me as an appropriate name.
So, what is a sin-eater?
In various cultures and folklore traditions, the concept of a sin eater is a figure with a solemn duty within the community. A person who was at once revered, but often also shunned. A sin eater is a person who, upon the death of another person, consumes food or drink that symbolically represents the sins or transgressions of the deceased. This act is believed to absolve the departed soul of its sins, allowing it to pass on to the afterlife without the burden of guilt or wrongdoing. Christ is an example of a sin-eater in Judeo-Christian culture. They occupy a unique and symbolic role within cultural and religious traditions, embodying themes of morality, redemption, and spiritual reconciliation.
The sin eater embodies the concept of scapegoating, where societal sins and burdens are transferred onto an individual who then expiates them through ritualistic means. By consuming the sins of others, the sin eater assumes a role of both condemnation and absolution, embodying the moral ambiguities and contradictions inherent in human nature, and reflecting the enduring quest for spiritual purity and absolution.
The sin eater is perhaps the mortal sibling to a psychopomp, as a bridge between the earthly realm and the spiritual realm. They embody the interconnectedness of the material and spiritual worlds and the role of intermediaries in facilitating spiritual transcendence. - Niki McQueen
